#22 FRIDAY PHOTOWALK: THE FIRST

Today, I take a gentle walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal close to my home in Berkshire, one hour west of London. I make that walk with you, taking along emails from the show’s ‘mail bag,’ your questions, your thoughts about photography and some answers to; “What does photography mean to you?” It’s the first of our Friday Photowalks to complement the Monday to Thursday show where I talk to guests from all genres including street, conflict, landscape and social photography.

So join me on a rain kissed walk along tow paths that would have been trod by horses pulling heavy barges laden with goods destined for London from the prosperous city of Bath when it was opened in 1810. The modest stretch of canal shortened a journey that was otherwise a long arduous land and sea routing between the cities east and west from one another and until the railways arrived, it was the safest and most efficient route by which to transport the famous Bath stone, food, coal, and other goods.

In the 1870s, the railways took away that trade as quicker, more efficient ways of transport were found and whole parts of the canal were eventually closed. Reopened in the 1950s after a restoration trust was founded, the route is now a popular network of walks and nature areas.

Pictures from today’s walk can be found below. And the boots, very essential… https://www.lowa.co.uk/

I’d also like to see your photowalk pictures. Send them to a special address by clicking here.

Reference was made during the show to a precious picture made by Mark Dell, the picture can be found below.

As Mark recounted; “Last year my father-in-law was dying from cancer and in July I took a shot as he was sitting in his chair telling me he had been lucky and had had a good life. The shot was with a Ricoh GRiii in BW and shows him sitting there in thought with his wedding photo in view also. This photo means everything to me and everyone that sees it.”
