#500 THE 500TH SHOW PHOTOWALK

FEATURING SPECIAL WALKING GUESTS FROM THE EXTRA MILE

The 500th episode! I'm joined by our community, walkers from across the UK, to walk across an open common that used to be one of the most feared nuclear airbases in the UK, which these days is often the muse for the Photowalk. Grab your camera and a good pair of walking shoes, we're going on a very special walk together!

Email your stories, thoughts, and pictures to the show. If you can optimize/resize photos to 2,500 pixels wide, that’s always much appreciated. If you’d like to support this show and have access to further content and the midweek Extra Mile show, we’d welcome you as an EXTRA MILER. There’s also our thriving Facebook group, a safe place to meet and talk with photographers of all interests, the Photowalk YouTube channel, plus the show is featured on Instagram, VERO and X.

As well as our Extra Milers, we’re also supported by our friends at Arthelper.ai who make marketing easier, helps more people find your work, and keeps your voice true—so you can get back to what you love most: making art. Enter PHOTOWALK at checkout to receive 30 days of the pro version free.

MORE ABOUT names, words, THE MUSIC and places FROM TODAY’S SHOW

Greenham Common, once a Royal Air Force base and later the site of historic peace protests, is now a vast public heathland where history and nature share the same open ground.

Historical photographs made during Greenham Common’s airbase life from WW2 onwards.

On the Extra Mile today I talk to Johann van de Walt, a South African photographer who followed his heart to China, marrying his wife, learning the language, and embracing the culture.

Andrew Heath’s YouTube channel, where he reviewed hundreds of film cameras, one per day. Also see the video library below.

My thanks to the team who make this show and our adventures possible including, Lynn Fraser, Giles Penfound, Neil Ford, Emily Renier, Kelly Mitchell, Andrea Gilpin, Michael Brennan, Michael Mixon, Mali Davies, Jason Florio, Sean Tucker, and Valerie Jardin. Also sincere love and thanks to my family of course, Sam, Jack, Thomas and Sir. Barkalot.

DUNCAN FERGUSON

Guess what? We had an absolutely incredible day! I think I’ve applied aftersun four times already. After leaving home this morning in a thunderstorm, I couldn’t have imagined the gorgeous sunny day we ended up with. It’s been so much fun chatting with people about their photography and sharing mine. I’ve had the pleasure of talking to a variety of folks, from hobbyists to professionals. I could’ve easily spent another day doing it!

I’ve attached a couple of images of my dad’s hand-me-down camera (silver, left) and my grandfather’s camera (right). My dad’s camera is a Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 524/2 that I’ve been using for a few months now. It’s been a learning experience, but it’s a whole different world compared to my old 35mm point-and-shoots or even cameras with focusing rings. These ones have distance rings, and it’s a bit of an estimation game to get things in focus. I’ve attached a few photos from the last few months (including special stocks talked about on the show). My grandfather’s camera is an Ensign Carbine No. 3b. I haven’t run any film through it yet. I’m thinking of holding off for a while because it’s so old, and I’m a bit nervous about using it. It even has wooden spools!
