#44 NO SUCH THING AS A PHOTOGRAPHER ANYMORE?
The title is a strange suggestion you may think, but Pulitzer prize winning photographer Cathal McNaughton has some thoughts about how his work in photography is adapting to meet new challenges our 'industry' faces. He also shares his feelings about awards, working internationally and giving back, rather than taking when making pictures.
I’ve been having this debate with several photographers in a particular forum group I’m a member of and it started after a mentoring session I ran with a small group of stills shooters keen to learn more about telling stories in sound, which is something clearly I’m interested in, otherwise I wouldn’t be here now. I know I can wax lyrical (and probably for too long) about the medium of sound being that lost sense that photographers can use too.
But equally on today’s show we talk about that elephant in the room that faces many stills photographers; the video button.
The world is changing, demands are changing and particularly now with many larger organisations finding that budgets have reset somewhat, the photographers able to find the video button and engage with sound, are likely to find themselves in a better position to navigate the choppier waters that may lie ahead.
Cathal McNaughton mentors photographs through one-to-one and masterclasses.
