#455 “MIRACLES ARE HAPPENING ALL AROUND US”

FEATURING PHOTOJOURNALISTS HOWARD BARLOW AND MARISSA ROTH

Alongside the letters I’m walking with today, my studio guest is Howard Barlow, a photojournalist who for 50 years has worked regularly for The Guardian, The Observer, The Telegraph, The Sunday Times and The Independent. He’s picked up numerous photographic awards, including Newspaper Photographer Of The Year.

Also, today, a wondrous hatful of first-time writers, we talk about design that makes life easier, photography that makes life happier, and learn how photography was an ever-present friend in the face of physical adversity. There are several whys of photography to answer, and atop that, Marissa Roth, a Pulitzer prize-winning photojournalist, answers a question of ethics. There’s also the final chance to take part in this month’s one-word assignment.

Email your stories, thoughts, and pictures to the show. If you can optimize/resize photos to 2,500 pixels wide, that’s always much appreciated. If you’d like to support this show and have access to further content and the midweek Extra Mile show, we’d welcome you as an EXTRA MILER. There’s also our thriving Facebook group, a safe place to meet and talk with photographers of all interests, the Photowalk YouTube channel, plus the show is featured on Instagram, VERO and X.

As well as our Extra Milers, we’re also supported by our incredible friends at MPB.com who have believed in this show from the get-go; the number one platform in the UK, US and Europe (with bases in Brighton, Brooklyn and Berlin) when it comes to buying, trading or selling quality used kit online. For those, who, like me have never heard of a Pronghorn, here’s the lowdown!

Mark Christensen introduces us to the photographic work of Colette Stevenson.

Howard mentions the Hillsborough disaster during our conversation, a fatal crowd crush at a football match in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, on 15 April 1989.

MUSIC LINKS: Velvet Moon sang and wrote the playout song today Good Man on Epidemic Music. Other music on the show is sourced primarily from Artlist and also features in Michael Brennan’s Spotify playlist GoFoto.
