#415 PHOTOWALK: SOS! TRAPPED WITHIN AN ICEBERG!

BUMPER-LENGTH SHOW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER/EXPLORER JILL HEINERTH

Canadian explorer, photographer, filmmaker and international speaker Jill Heinerth joins me today for a bumper edition of The Photowalk podcast. We talk about the medical importance of our oceans, cave diving, incredible creatures beneath the waves, swimming with Polar bears and the story of a sub-marine diving mission into and iceberg. Also today, the why of making sketchbook pictures, the nostalgia of vintage prints, plus mentor and street photographer Valérie Jardin returns to launch this year's monthly Visual Stories features, which in 2024 is all about photographic feature making, starting with ONE CENTURY.

Email your stories, thoughts, and pictures to the show. If you can optimize/resize photos to 2,500 pixels wide, that’s always much appreciated. If you’d like to support this show and have access to further content and the midweek Extra Mile show, we’d welcome you as an EXTRA MILER. There’s also our thriving Facebook group, a safe place to meet and talk with photographers of all interests, plus the show is featured on Instagram, VERO and X.

As well as our Extra Milers, we’re also supported by our incredible friends at MPB.com who have believed in this show from the get-go; the number one platform in the UK, US and Europe (with bases in Brighton, Brooklyn and Berlin) when it comes to buying, trading or selling quality used kit online. MORE ABOUT names, words and places FROM TODAY’S SHOW

Jill Heinerth is a Canadian cave diver, speaker, photographer, filmmaker and underwater explorer. She has dived and made TV series for the National Geographic Channel and the BBC, plus consulted on movies for directors including James Cameron. Jill was inspired by the underwater explorations of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author. Jill learned to dive in a national marine sanctuary in Canada, and for the start of her career used Nikonos specialist underwater cameras.

In today’s show we talk about amazing creatures and stories including the Giant Pacific Octopus, Bivalve Mollusk, My Octopus Teacher movie, the Ross Ice Shelf and touch on the story of Ben’s Vortex.

Also today from my conversation with Valérie Jardin, Joshua Coomb’s Do Something for Nothing project, which is also one of Valérie’s photo projects.

Link to Tony Lorenzo’s episode as he goes in search of June.

Marissa Roth is a photojournalist who has appeared on a few of our podcasts, and ‘we’ think responsible for the first mention of using a camera as a sketchbook of life.
