#199 LEAVING AND WAVING, PHOTOGRAPHIC GOLD

Leaving and Waving; 27 years of photographs by photographer and artist Deanna Dikeman, pictures of her parents as they waved goodbye after Deanna's visits to their home in Sioux City. The work is now a book and has received much press attention as it launches this month. It’s inspired many who have seen early versions of this greater study of her parents in progress, proving that the simplest of ideas can make the most powerful stories.

It is International Women’s Day today and in the foreword photowalk to today’s episode we talk of the work of Dorothea Lange and the Migrant Mother portrait in particular.

Patron of the day today is Helen Fennell and I’ve picked one project in particular from Helen’s work; Repetition. During the various lockdowns, Helen has been making photowalks and stopping to make closer studies of lone isolated flowers. Close up, simple, monochrome flora, with the background pretty much faded to black. She talks of one moment making the study; “I was down on my hands and knees trying to get the composition I wanted, being tutted at by a couple with matching cagoules. Clearly not lovers of the photographic art.” There seems to be somewhat of a theme today; that the simplest of images can make potent compositions.

We’re proud to have MPB.com as a show supporter. They are the number one place for selling your used kit to other photographers online in America, the UK and Europe. What happens if you decide to sell gear to make some extra money from kit you just don't use anymore. You go to MPB.com, hit the sell button, enter the details, get an instant quote and then if all is good, those nice people at MPB send a courier to collect your boxed up kit. It arrives at the warehouse, gets checked in and if all the descriptions and quality adds up, you get paid, same day as arrival. I’ve personally been using MPB for many years because they’re fair, they’re quick and I know I can trust the descriptions.

Photographs copyright Deanna Dikeman. Not to be reproduced or used without express permission of the photographer.
