#552 THE MONGOLIAN ADVENTURE SPECIAL PT.1
FEATURING OUR ADVENTURERS IN MONGOLIA 2026
This week, we're taking you to Mongolia, travelling across the vast open steppe in Russian UAZ vans, meeting nomadic families, and discovering a way of life shaped by the land, the seasons, and the animals that depend on it. Along the way, you'll find traditional Mongolian hospitality, yoghurt vodka, ancient standing stones, wild horses, and a fair bit of bouncing around on roads that barely deserve the name. With our fellow adventurers and local guide Shuren, we explore ruined monasteries hidden in the mountains, hear extraordinary stories of Chinggis Khaan and visit places where Mongolia's remarkable history has left some painful reminders. Recorded as we travel, with the voices, laughter and experiences of the people alongside us, this is a Photowalk adventure through one of the world's most extraordinary landscapes.

Join us in Venice for the Venice ‘26 retreat, photographing a city built on water, light, and ritual as winter settles across the lagoon. Together we’ll wander through early-morning markets, quiet canal edges, hidden monasteries, and the weathered backstreets of Castello and Cannaregio, with time to slow down, take photographs, and build creative confidence in a city that reveals itself gently when the crowds disappear. Places limited.
The national park where we went looking for Mongolia's remarkable takhi, or Przewalski's horses. Once extinct in the wild, these horses have been successfully reintroduced to the Mongolian steppe. The park's website offers more on its conservation work and the landscape we explored.
A fascinating look at how Mongolia's herding families balance centuries-old traditions with modern technology. From gers and seasonal migrations to smartphones and satellite tracking, it's a reminder that nomadic life is very much part of present-day Mongolia.
The monastery we visited in the Khögnö Khan mountains, where we heard the story of an invading army and a glint of sunlight that allegedly betrayed the monks' hiding place. The ruins of the old monastery are reached by hiking into the hills.
We visit Kharkhorin, once the capital of the Mongol Empire, and explore a Buddhist monastery that suffered terrible destruction during the 1930s purges. UNESCO's guide to the Orkhon Valley explains why this region has played such an important part in Mongolian history for more than a thousand years.
The UAZ, a wonderfully uncompromising Russian vans that carried us across Mongolia's rough tracks. Built to cope with difficult terrain rather than pamper their passengers, the UAZ has become a familiar sight throughout the country. Here's the manufacturer's own history of these extraordinary machines.
