#176 BREAK DANCING, STREET ART & THE ‘BLACK SUN’

Renowned Danish portrait photographer Søren Solkær is back for the second concluding part to his story and we talk about two very different projects, both however involve a lot of flight in their own ways and both are the result of inspiration while growing up. In the first, Surface, a project that followed street artists twice around the planet, and the second; his incredible Black Sun project about Starlings murmurations! We also talk a little tech today, not something we always consider on this title preferring the why for the how.

FURTHER REFERENCE MADE TO: Blek le Rat street artist who apparently inspired Banksy, Anton Corbijn’s music work and the Nuclear Photowalk on KAGE Collective.

Today the show is supported also be our good friends now at MPB.com - unlike other camera resellers, MPB focuses exclusively on used kit. With over 160,000 cameras, lenses and accessories traded each year, MPB offers buyers and traders unrivalled choice of digital photo and video kit. The MPB platform in Europe and America provides more than £250M in quotes to sellers per year and ensures that sellers are paid the same day. You get more money for your kit, and more kit for your money; a win win as they say. By inspiring photographers and filmmakers to choose used, MPB is making creative industries more sustainable and driving the circular economy.

Patron of the Day today is Helen Fennell. It seems the end of 2020 and the start of 2021 has seen a lot of photographers working on, making new and upgrading their websites. Helen’s been doing exactly that and in doing so, “Cleared out the rubbish/out of date stuff.” One interesting thing Helen discovered whilst sorting through her 2020 catalogue from last year is that every single one featured was taken on a Fujifilm X100V. Not a single one was taken on anything else, bar a couple of grab shots on the iPhone. As she says; “Perhaps that's a hint I should get rid of my other gear?” There’s a project which particularly caught my eye, a game of photographic Monopoly.

In a year where I studied my own exif data from favourite shots or pictures that feel like I’d made them, if that makes sense, I’d be intrigued to know about the camera or lens, or combination that you keep coming back to?
