#230 WITNESSING HISTORY WITH YOUR PICTURES
Independent photojournalist Rick Findler's work focuses on both domestic features as well as travelling to some of the most dangerous places on Earth, to shine a light on other people’s stories and tales. The Afghan female ski team, autism, escaping from Syria, the Beirut blast, mentoring children and helping corporate execs understand stress and fear; the wide gamut of stories today. Rick feels like an inquisitive though calm natured pragmatist, with a serious sense of adventure and though unlikely partners in terms of a creative or even business arrangement, it works. Here is a photographer who knows how to tell a story, accepts that sometimes he’ll not be able to sell everything he makes, but makes it anyway, because he knows it’s a story that needs telling for someone who may not have the where-with-all, to tell it themselves.
Patron of the Day today is Johan Otterdahl and I need to read you the introduction he makes on his website: “Age: 41 years old, but got stuck at 27. Nationality: Swedish passport, New Zealand driver’s license, Spanish resident and an Italian mother. Everywhere is home.” You get a sense of this from his website, but I’m drawn this time of mentioning to ‘100 Strangers’, a portrait project that does exactly as it says on the proverbial tin. Johan adds that the project is a street photographic journey. A one way photographic motorway filled with interesting meetings, nervous and scary moments, smiles, new friends and a great education. I ask for a photo, a name and favourite music.
