#325 ASSIGNMENT: KARAH MEW #1

Karah Mew sets a challenge that will have you digging a little deep, because you're being asked this week to do something as photographers, we're not quite used to, or at least comfortable doing! All will be revealed. We'll both be fascinated to see what you come up with for this assignment and will share the pictures you make for this on this showpage. Please send yours 2000 pixels wide, or best quality out of a smartphone to studio@photographydaily.show

My thanks to our wonderful Patrons and MPB.com who sponsor this show; the number one company in the UK, the US and Europe when it comes to buying, selling, and trading used camera kit online – it’s a safe place to do business, with guarantees upon what you buy.

Karah Mew sets this week’s assignment, to have you thinking about your photography and YOU!

Going alone on a hiking trip is challenging for many reasons. Nobody is there to follow or to be guided. Nobody is there to give you a hand when you slip or fall. You carry all the weight yourself, no one is there to share with. Not only physical weight but also mental weight. The only person you talk to/laugh at/get angry with, is you. Also, you are the one who takes your photos. This photo reminds me of all of these thoughts I had during the trip. I'm tired and thirsty. Sun doesn't show mercy but clouds do, sometimes. Found a rock, threw everything on me, sat on the rock, and chugged all the water.

Stuck at an unfulfilling job (at least it pays well, right?!), a lonely relationship, a crap apartment (I had a much better one before I moved in with my current girlfriend) and friends far away, I wanted to capture a feeling how I see myself day-to-day. This particular image is focused on how I feel about my job, when I know I should be doing it, but I just can't seem to get to it, because my entire being is saying no. Since my C-stand is in the office, I had to try compositing for the first time. One image with me holding the flash in the right spot, and another with me on the bed with a self-timer...

The project this week was more of a challenge to me than I thought it would be. I have been a photographer for 12 years but only in the last couple of weeks have I decided to start experimenting with studio photography. I decided this week’s challenge would be a perfect time to practice what I am learning. I am pretty happy with the way this picture came out and I am excited to keep exploring the idea of studio portraits. Thank you for keeping us all inspired and motivated to keep producing interesting work.

Here is my selfie taken this morning while I was fishing off from Chesil Beach here in Dorset-Land. I’m staring at my rod tips, watching for a fish to nibble my bait and yes it was a two-coat temperature at 7am! Taken with my phone propped in my tackle bag.

Hi, I completed this last week. I have never seen myself so close up. STUBBLE macro. I was housebound with a broken leg and wanted to try and get my stubble looking like the aftermath of a forest fire. Might be my state of mind but I kind of like the fact they are quite raw. Initially, I had hoped shining a small light into it would get interesting shadows. Emm… I tried focus stacking but it was getting very tricky. These give the idea of what I was trying... maybe more like Stubble burning…Oly Em1 MkII, 60mm macro.
