CHINATOWN-NYC-MANHATTAN

By Zeeshan Khan

I was having a bit of trouble naming this series. I wanted to call it Cinematic Chinatown but mid-day daylight did not really allow it. I ended up calling it just Chinatown. To be specific, this is Chinatown-NYC-Manhattan.

New York City has been my home for over twenty years, but only lately I've made the effort to start documenting it. Chinatown has been an area of intrigue for a while now. I spent a few summer months in 2020 documenting around the neighbourhood. The businesses have seen a significant decline due to ‘The Covid.’ It equally hasn’t helped that the outgoing President employed an accusational tone toward the Chinese community.

The overall experience shooting on the streets of Chinatown was that of ease. I enjoyed the variety of colours, architecture, human expression, emotion, vibrant store fronts, and inquisitive glares. I wanted to capture the essence of life in the neighbourhood.

All images were made on the Leica M10R using a 24mm Elmar 3.8 lens. I did my own colour grading in Lightroom to give it a journalistic and reportage look. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks, Zeeshan Khan
