SKATEBOARDING IN ANY LIGHT
By Zeeshan Khan
This photo essay tackles two subjects. High ISO action photography with the Leica M10 Monochrom and a continuation of my skate park series.
Lately, I've been intrigued by the creative freedom of skateboarders while spending time at the local skate park. It is the perfect hunting ground for action photography. Honestly, their fearless attitude is infectious. I say that because they have inspired me to get in the middle of the action to capture images. Before, I was cautious and kept a safe distance so I do not get hit by a rogue flying skateboard, stunt bike, skaters shoe, etc. I will point out that I did get hit by a rogue skateboard. Thankfully it did not cause any damage, to my camera that is.
I typically spend Friday evenings capturing such moments. One other key aspect of making images at the park is that no one is bothered by it. They go about their business and at times they'll approach me to just chit chat about random stuff. Some folks wanted to talk about Leica lenses and others about general photography. I also learned that photography is part of skateboarding culture. There are actually a ton of great photographers who are skateboarders as well as musicians. You have names like Tyler Shields, J. Grant Brittain, Ed Templeton, Ray Barbee, Atiba Jefferson, and more.
The Leica M10M has allowed me to shoot in pretty much any light. These images were made using high shutter speeds with ISO 12500+, and drawn with a 90mm-Macro-Elmar f4 lens, aperture set between f4 and f8. I used the zone focusing technique to capture the action. Such a camera set up has allowed me to capture numerous images with ease. If you can think it you can create it. I am awed by the endless creative possibilities and my faith in the system. I know that I will have glorious files to work with Lightroom.
To finish off this essay I'd like to randomly mention my favourite photographer of all time. Fan Ho. He said, "Don’t just be inspired by photography". What he meant by that was take inspiration in other forms of art like literature, poetry, music, cinema, etc.
