#54 FRIDAY PHOTOWALK: CASTLES AND WARS

Today’s Photowalk Edition is a rain and wind swept walk to Donnington Castle in Newbury, a ruined medieval castle peering down upon the small village of Donnington, an impressive stone’s throw north of Newbury in Berkshire. As we emerge from our various lockdowns and self imposed travel limits, this town, this county, has been a welcome ‘home’ for these photowalks.

Built upon the grounds he possessed by Sir Richard Adderbury the elder, in 1398, the castle was sold to Thomas Chaucer, son to the poet Geoffrey Chaucer as a home for his daughter Alice. The gift of a castle? The smart money was clearly in literature.

Fast forward a few centuries and various disagreements between parliamentarians and royalists during the English civil war, the castle was voted for demolition in 1646. The gatehouse is all that remains of what must have been a magnificent, if modest castle.

The photowalk edition is a chance for us all to escape to whatever views lay before us on a Friday, cityscapes count, to share some time walking and picture making. Send in your stories of where you have been, feedback on episodes and general photo ‘stuff,’ so that I may take that mailbag on these walks: studio@photographydaily.show
