#56 SOCIALLY DISTANCED SHOOTING. REALLY?
Acutely aware this podcast is not aimed at any particular genre, today’s episode is built around a business shooting experience I had at the weekend in my social photography genre/arena. It may not be your genre, but I think it raised some interesting considerations around this so called, ‘social distancing’. And I’ll come back to why I say, so called, in a moment.
It may be, and there are plenty of you, that you don’t actually have a photography business, and this show for you, is about the photography, not the business. But I still think it comes back to this so called social distancing issue, or etiquette, if you will.
Social distancing.
Whether it’s one metre, two metres, a thousand metres, whatever, it does feel a little like an arbitrary figure. It doesn’t really matter what number you place before it, I’m only paying lip service anyway.
I’ve had a few requests for coffee of late. Once upon a time someone might say; “Let’s meet for a coffee.” These days they’ll caveat that invite with a cautious; “Socially distanced of course.” But is that because they mean it, or I mean it, or is that because it’s the correct thing to say?
Friday night into Saturday morning I made a couple of audio diary entries as I approached my first commercial event job since the UK lockdown was initially announced. You’ll hear those along with Adam Johnson, award winning social and wedding shooter, who faced my question; “Can you really photograph an event and remain socially distanced? And are events actually following distancing etiquette anyway? Are they required to? What should you expect as a photographer?”
