#178 STOP THE STEAL’S FROZEN MOMENT: INAUGURATION WEEK

American photojournalist Raquel Natalicchio, in Washington this week for the Inauguration of the 46th President of the United States of America, talks of the Stop the Steal rally in LA outside City Hall, where she trained her camera on the plight of a woman called Berlinda Nibo, attacked by a mob of protestors, set upon, beaten, maced and racially assaulted. Raquel made a record as the ordeal took place and recounts two stories, as a photographer and as a person.

Our patron of the day is Emily Renier, very much known to this podcast through her writing in the friends tab that everyone can be a part of incidentally, photo stories written by those who listen. You’ll have heard from Emily just prior to Christmas and its her street work that I’ll link to today, which on Insta is @_emily.renier.street_

Emily says of her photography; “My ultimate passion in life is to find common ground in differences, however significant the difference may be. The media and in particular social media is thriving on polarised views, on fuelling anger. Why? We are the same, really. None of us have got our s**t together. We're all complete mixed bags of both wander and weirdness in equal measures, wherever we come from. So my projects tend to try to celebrate the humanity in all people and putting all of us on an equal playing field. Louis Theroux is one of my favourite doc film-maker because he does just that - he goes and finds the polarised, looks into the "why" rather than the "what", and in doing so seeks out the humanity in all the people he meets. I love that.”

Today's show is also supported by the camera professional people, MPB.com. I’ve been talking about them for a couple of months now and I know that I'd find it hard to promote something I don't know or haven't personally used on this channel and I have a strong history personally of using MPB to buy, sell and trade gear - taking away the nightmare scenario that some trading platforms have where you just don't know what you're getting, have no guarantee and often the uncertainty that the kit being advertised is the kit you get. That's the thing about MPB, when you buy you can click on an item and have a look at the actual gear you're buying.
