NYPD BUILDING BLUES
By Zeeshan Khan
One place in New York that makes me go....
I'm not sure if you get the same feeling when visiting marvels of architecture. The feeling of awe, calm, inspiration, and a sense of everlasting peace echoing through your mind. I am swarmed by such feelings every time I visit my favourite building in New York City. Sure, there are many such places around town but this particular one stands out. Every city has one such building and in NYC, this is the one for me.
I am talking about the Police Building Apartments, former NYPD Headquarters, built in 1909, and converted to condominiums in 1988. For almost eighty years it served as the seat of power for the proud NYPD.
It is situated in the Nolita neighbourhood, standing proud against the backdrop of lower Manhattan. In the style of renaissance revival, it represents the very beauty of a city that is home to millions. It is sad that many historic buildings around town have been converted to condominiums or shopping centers. I wish they had declared it as a heritage site and converted into a museum for people to enjoy.
Every time I visit this building I touch its stone to feel its glorified past. Well, this is normal practice for me when photographing architecture. I want to feel connected with what is standing in front of me. These series of photos were taken over time and presented in a way to depict the very nature of its awe.
