Very much in a mindfulness place I headed down to Mt Cook National Park at the weekend, a couple of hours South from where I live. It’s a majestic place, with scenery that takes the breath of a seasoned landscape appreciator like myself! Needless to day, batteries - check, lens caps off - check, boots on - check. Walking was done!
My destination was the Tasman Glacier lake. The glacier - the longest in New Zealand - calves impressive icebergs at this time of year, and may accumulate close to where the lake outflows into the Tasman river which in turn feeds Lake Pukaki. This place is incredibly special; you truly feel the power of nature here. The impressive peak of Aoraki/Mt Cook (seen on left of image) rises high above the Valley, dwarfing the rest of the peaks. The sound of running water adds to the calm, yet in the background the distant sound of avalanches, triggered by the spring warmth, reminds you that this is a place to be respected.
My image is a stitched panorama of 10 frames, taken from the edge of the lake as it empties into the river system. The shutter was dragged using a Lee Little Stopper 6-stop ND filter, and I added a Nisi ND1.2 Grad to balance the bright spring afternoon sky.
