365:40 SUE SAYER
I thought I would submit an image of Birnbeck Pier (correct name) or the Old Pier as it's locally known, for the Community 365 Project. I've been photographing the Old Pier for some years now, watching its gradual decline.
In the past couple of years, when doing a long exposure, I've noticed that when conditions appear just right the image produces long lines in the water. I call them 'stanchion lines'. I have a theory that they could be related to the moon, but it's just that - a theory! I think that around the time of a full moon, the water is forced much more ferociously between the land & the island, causing much greater drag on the pier stanchions thus causing the lines to be made.
When I do get the right conditions, the lines to the right of the Pier are when the tide is coming in & when they are to the left, the tide is going out. Being on the Severn Estuary, the sea is very brown & usually the images are processed to be B&W. However, just occasionally depending on the sky, the sea can appear blue or even silver.
